On Writing, by Stephen King, is perhaps the most inspirational tool for aspiring writers on the market today. Yes, it contains instructive and informative information, but more, it offers a look into the soul of a man who's greatest passion, for his entire life, has been to entertain others. By far, the most useful resource any writer could have in their collection. This book is a must for any aspiring or practicing writer. Period.

A Room of One's Own, by Virginia Woolf. Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf? A lot of people, apparently. While generally considered a "feminist" author, this extended essay is both insightful and instructive for writers of either sex. My advice? Much like much of life, take what you can use, and throw out the rest.
